SAY THE WORD BY JULIE JOHNSON – EXCERPT #1

I’m not a bad person. I vote, I pay my taxes on time, and I make funny faces at babies in the supermarket to make them laugh. I tear up at those awful animal cruelty commercials Sarah McLaughlin is always singing on, and I shower on a regular basis. I donate to charities even though I’m still juggling monthly student loan and car payments on top of my rent and grocery expenses. I stay out of the drama at work because work is hard enough to get through without wondering which of my catty coworkers is going to stab me in the back with a knife clutched in her perfectly manicured fingers. I don’t smoke or drink excessively – fine, I admit, occasionally I may indulge in a few too many glasses of merlot, but nobody’s perfect – and I force myself to go running in Central Park at least three times a week. By anyone’s standards, I’m normal. A girl with her act together. Some might even call me “nice” and, for the most part, they’d be right. I’m not a bad person. I’m just not a particularly good one either. To be fair, you can’t ever really consider yourself a good person when you’ve been singlehandedly responsible for the utter destruction of another person’s happiness. And that’s really the only term you can use to describe what I did to Sebastian Covington all those years ago – I destroyed him. I watched unflinchingly as the life and love drained out of his eyes, and walked away without a backward glance. It’s kind of funny how a decision you make when you’re eighteen can change your whole life forever. And by funny I mostly mean absolutely fucking terrible. When I broke off our relationship, I knew I was hurting him worse than he’d ever been hurt. Harder, though, was the knowledge that I was putting myself through unimaginable pain from which I would never recover. I still remember that evening so clearly; I don’t think I’ll ever forget it. Two eighteen year old kids, standing at our spot by the old oak behind his house. The hot summer sun was setting and a slight breeze chilled the air as we stood a few paces apart staring at one another. Bash could read me better than anyone – even before I’d spoken, I think he knew what was coming. His eyes had changed, an unfamiliar wariness filling them as soon as my lips parted. I’d taken a deep breath and forced myself to say the words that would tear us apart forever. And when I’d turned my back and walked away, haunted by the look of betrayal and incomprehension in his eyes, I’d known we’d never speak again. The damage I’d inflicted with my words had cut too deep to ever really heal. I didn’t let myself cry then – that would come later, when I was alone in my bedroom and could finally allow the dull ache of my shattered heart to spread through my system like a lethal paralytic. I’d known then, at eighteen, that my case of heartbreak was terminal, incurable. It wasn’t “puppy love” or “first love” or any of the loves that supposedly fade with time and large quantities of ice cream. Because when you walk away from your soul mate – when you take real, true love and throw it in the fire and watch as it burns down to ashes – you know you’ll never be the same again. The heart isn’t like the liver; it doesn’t regenerate, no matter how much time passes. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for good. I’d left mine with Sebastian when I walked away that day, and I hadn’t seen it in the seven years since.

Release Day: WHERE THERE’S SMOKE by Elizabeth Lee

We are thrilled to celebrate the Release Day of Elizabeth Lee's WHERE THERE'S SMOKE!!! WHERE THERE’S SMOKE is a New Adult Romantic Suspense novel that you don't want to miss!

  Where There's Smoke Front Cover

About WHERE THERE’S SMOKE:

There is something to be said for letting go. Ryland Roberts knows that better than anyone. He'd let go of his ambitions, of his family and—most of all—of her. He'd perfected the art of putting his past behind him and accepted the fact that the town he wanted to leave in his rearview was the place where he was going to live out his days. But sometimes the past doesn't just go away. Sometimes it comes back to haunt you. Piper Jameson convinced herself that she left for all the right reasons. She'd saved people by leaving—made sure that they weren't tainted by her rebellious ways. When her little sister asks her to come home and say goodbye to their ailing mother, she's forced to see that things aren't always as they seem. The people who she'd left behind might not have been saved at all. In the amount of time it takes a bullet to travel from point A to point B, Piper and Ryland will have to put their feelings for each other aside and make a choice. Forced on the run with Piper's sister, they begin to understand that the future they thought was gone was never really lost.

  WHERE THERE’S SMOKE Excerpt:

I stretched my arm out and placed a hand on the cool concrete, the grit and dirt sticking to my palm. Such a contrast to the warmth I felt with Ryland firmly pressed up against me. The curves of my backside fit perfectly against his long, lean frame, our skin heating up the chill around us. The fall weather had descended upon our small Midwestern town almost overnight. It seemed like only a week or two ago we had been wearing shorts and flip-flops. Now it was jeans and jackets. Well, actually, now it was nothing. I felt my cheeks heat as I thought about what we had just done. I wasn't embarrassed. Far from it. In fact, I'd never felt more sure about anything in my entire life as I was about what had just happened with Ry. “That was incredible,” he whispered against my neck as he traced lazy circles on my shoulder with his fingertips. “Yeah,” I breathed, rolling onto my back to look up at him. The soft glow of an outdoor utility light crept through the open side of the airplane hangar, barely lighting up the space. “Never imagined our first time being on a blanket spread out on a cold, hard floor, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.” “Me too. Let’s get on that then,” he said with a wicked grin before he pressed his lips to mine. Propping himself on one arm—his hand resting against the side of his head—he snaked his free hand under one of the flannel blankets he'd commandeered from an airplane parked beside us. I liked this side of him. The side that wasn't perfect and calculated. The side that just did, said, and felt what he wanted. He was literally feeling his way up my body—his hands smooth and rough all at the same time—sending all of my teenage hormones spiraling out of control. We were living in the moment, which was exactly where I preferred to be. “You know how much I love you, right?” His face became very serious, almost concerned. “I wanted tonight to be special. I thought we'd go back to my house after we looked at the planes. My parents are gone and...” He was back in his head, thinking about his meticulously thought-out evening. Doubting his ability to be perfect. He did this sometimes—overanalyzed things. “It didn't go exactly as I planned, but—” “It was perfect,” I assured him. “Plans, schmans.” I pulled his face to mine, giggling, my lips barely grazing his. “And I love you, too.” That was the thing about Ryland—I saw a side of him that no one else saw. I could probably say the same for him about me. Until him, I’d never felt like I was going to amount to much, but he believed in me, even when I didn't—which was most of the time. When I was with him, I didn't feel like I needed to do everything in my power to piss people off. He made me want to stay in this Godforsaken town with a family that ignored my existence. They ignored it until I did something wrong—which was about ninety percent of the time. Then my stepfather made sure to let me just how worthless I was. “So do you feel like a rebel?” I asked. “This being your first breaking and entering and all.” It had been his idea to sneak on to the airfield—something that was much more in my wheelhouse than his. I was the one who usually threw caution to the wind. He was the good boy. The straight-A student. The doting son. “Oh yeah.” He laughed. “I'm a regular badass. Nothing like walking through an open gate to an abandoned shed.” He cast his arm out sarcastically in the vacant space above our heads. Nothing but sheet metal and wooden beams. A handful of airplanes were parked around us with a smattering of fuel cans, tools, and parachutes hanging from the walls. “I'm not sure we actually broke into anything. More like casually strolled in.” We lived in a town where people left their front doors unlocked. The kind of town where everyone knew everyone and all of their business. Truitville. It was a place with a minimal crime rate. I think that night, that's what we’d both thought: What's the worst that could happen? “So what's next then, Clyde? Wanna rob a bank?”

Excerpt

I opened my eyes and looked up at him. He was standing over me, wearing only a towel, his body glistening from not being dried properly. A line of water ran down the curving Maori tattoo on his right arm, dripping onto the carpet. He had the type of body made from a construction site—powerfully built and tanned, his muscular biceps and six-pack not from a gym. He pushed a hand through his wet brown hair, the stubble from last night gone. He was delicious, but all I wanted was for him to get dressed and go to work, so I could get back to the countless messages I had to answer. There were too many to deal with, all to do with my writing. My thoughts made me feel guilty, even more so since Tom was staring down at me with need in his eyes, the proof pushing at his towel. But, I was overwhelmed with work, overwhelmed with stress, and I really didn’t need him adding to it.

Cover Reveal: Begin Again (Starting Over #3) by Evan Grace

Releasing May 27, 2014
Synopsis

Two years ago Journey Cummings spent two of the best weeks of her life with the man of her dreams, until he left her without even a goodbye.

Journey has spent the last two years trying to find the man that left her high and dry after two blissful weeks together, but he seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth. With no hope in finding the father of her son she tried to just move on, until a chance encounter changes everything.

Dylan Carmichael knew he messed up when he lied and walked away from Journey two years ago, but it was over and there was nothing he could do about it now. That is until she walked into his brother's reception on the arm of another and drops the biggest bombshell, he has a son.

Can Dylan prove to Journey that he won't walk away again and can she trust him with her heart and their son? When tragedy strikes can Dylan be man enough to keep their new little family together before it falls apart?

Dylan followed her to her little sedan she drove. She tossed the bag in the front and went to the back passenger side door. Turning to face him she held Joey out to him. “Can you give your daddy a kiss bye-bye?”

He scooped up his boy in his arms and took the hat off his head, kissing his thick, dark hair. It melted his heart when Joey wrapped his arms around his neck and slobbered on his cheek. “Bye, little man. You be a good boy for your momma, okay?”

His boy was smart as soon as he heard the word momma he turned to Journey, pointed, said “momma” and then clapped his hands.

“Why don’t you buckle him in? Trust me you’ll want to practice. They can be tricky to maneuver.” She pulled the back door open for him and backed away while he carefully placed Joey in his seat. He could tell Joey was tired by the way he started rubbing his eyes when Dylan put his arms through the straps. After that he was lost, he couldn’t figure it out. He could take apart and put back together any type of M16, but strapping his child into his car seat seemed to require a Ph.D. He heard the other door open and soon Journey was on the other side.

The light floral scent she was wearing, invaded his senses. His dick twitched in his pants and he felt like a big old asshole. She had-had that effect on him two years ago and it seemed she still did. He gave her a sheepish look. “It appears I’m not intelligent enough to figure this out.”

“Here let me show you.” Her hands brushed up against his and he heard her quick intake of breath. He knew she felt the shock that passed through him too. Watching her strap their boy in was hard to do because he was willing the erection that was starting-to stop. When he heard the last click he looked up at her. Their faces were close together that he could see the light dusting of freckles across her nose and cheeks. If he leaned in just a couple of inches their lips would be touching. ‘Fuck it’ he thought but, as soon as he started to lean in Joey started crying.

Dylan could admit that as soon as his little boy started to cry he panicked. He looked up at Journey who reached out rubbing Joey’s tears away from his cheeks.

“It’s okay Angel. Momma’s gonna take you home and put you to bed, okay?” Her voice was soft and soothing. Her southern drawl was thick as she murmured to their boy. She was a wonderful mother, granted he only witnessed her with Joey today but he could tell how much she loved that boy.
“I better get him home.” Journey whispered when he noticed Joey nodding off.

“Yeah sure.” He leaned down and kissed Joey’s forehead, got out and shut the door as quietly as possible. Journey came around to the driver’s side door and looked up at him. Her uncertainty was evident all over her face. “I’ll meet you here at six on Friday.”

“That sounds good. Um-well it was good seeing you again.” She pulled her door open but Dylan stopped her before she got in. He wasn’t sure why he did, but he couldn’t let her leave yet. She looked up at him, “what, Dylan?”

“Listen, Journey I’ve done nothing but fuck things up and say the wrong things since I saw you last. For what it’s worth I’m sorry and I plan on making it up to you both.” He leaned down and brushed his lips against hers. He backed away smiling and looked down at his sleeping son in the backseat. “See you, Friday.”
