  About BURYING WATER:

The top-selling, beloved indie author of Ten Tiny Breaths returns with a new romance about a young woman who loses her memory—and the man who knows that the only way to protect her is to stay away. Left for dead in the fields of rural Oregon, a young woman defies all odds and survives—but she awakens with no idea who she is, or what happened to her. Refusing to answer to “Jane Doe” for another day, the woman renames herself “Water” for the tiny, hidden marking on her body—the only clue to her past. Taken in by old Ginny Fitzgerald, a crotchety but kind lady living on a nearby horse farm, Water slowly begins building a new life. But as she attempts to piece together the fleeting slivers of her memory, more questions emerge: Who is the next-door neighbor, quietly toiling under the hood of his Barracuda? Why won’t Ginny let him step foot on her property? And why does Water feel she recognizes him? Twenty-four-year-old Jesse Welles doesn’t know how long it will be before Water gets her memory back. For her sake, Jesse hopes the answer is never. He knows that she’ll stay so much safer—and happier—that way. And that’s why, as hard as it is, he needs to keep his distance. Because getting too close could flood her with realities better left buried. The trouble is, water always seems to find its way to the surface.

  BURYING WATER Excerpt:

Prologue Jesse Now This can’t be real . . . This can’t be real . . . This can’t be real . . . The words cycle round and round in my mind like the wheels on my speeding ’Cuda as its ass-end slips and slides over the gravel and ice. This car is hard to handle on the best of days, built front-heavy and overloaded with horsepower. I’m going to put myself into one of these damn trees if I don’t slow down. I jam my foot against the gas pedal. I can’t slow down now. Not until I know that Boone was wrong about what he claims to have overheard. His Russian is mediocre at best. I’ll giveanything for him to be wrong about this. My gut clenches as my car skids around another turn, the cone shape of Black Butte looming like a monstrous shadow ahead of me in the pre-dawn light. The snowy tire tracks framed by my headlights might not even be the right ones, but they’re wide like Viktor’s Hummer and they’re sure as hell the only ones down this old, deserted logging road. No one comes out here in January. The line of trees marking the dead end comes up on me before I expect it. I slam on my brakes, sending my car sliding sideways toward the old totem pole. It’s still sliding when I cut the rumbling engine, throw open the door, and jump out, fumbling with my flashlight. It takes three hard presses with my shaking hands to get the light to hold. I begin searching the ground. The mess of tread marks tells me that someone pulled a U-turn. The footprints tell me that more than one person got out. And when I see the half-finished cigarette butt with that weird alphabet on the filter, I know Boone wasn’t wrong. “Alex!” My echo answers once . . . twice . . . before the vast wilderness swallows up my desperate cry. With frantic passes of my flashlight, my knuckles white against its body, I search the area until I spot the sets of footprints that lead off the old, narrow road and into the trees. Frigid fingers curl around my heart. Darting back to my car, I snatch the old red-and-blue plaid wool blanket that she loves so much from the backseat. Ice-cold snow packs into the sides of my sneakers as I chase the trail past the line of trees and into the barren field ahead, my blood rushing through my ears the only sound I process. The only sign of life. Raw fear numbs my senses, the Pacific Northwest winter numbs my body, but I push forward because if . . . The beam of light passes over a still form lying facedown in the snow. I’d recognize that pink coat and platinum-blond hair of hers anywhere; the sparkly blue dress that she hates so much looks like a heap of sapphires against a white canvas. My heart freezes. “Alex.” It’s barely a whisper. I’m unable to produce more, my lungs giving up on me. I run, stumbling through the foot of snow until I’m on my knees and crawling forward to close the distance. A distance of no more than ten feet and yet one that seems like miles. There’s no mistaking the spray of crimson freckling the snow around her head. Or that most of her long hair is now dark and matted. Or that her silver stockings are torn and stained red, and a pool of blood has formed where her dress barely covers her thighs. Plenty of footprints mark the ground around her. He must have been here for a while. I know that there are rules to follow, steps to make sure that I don’t cause her further harm. But I ignore them because the sinking feeling in my stomach tells me I can’t possibly hurt her more than he already has. I nestle her head with one hand while I slide the other under her shoulder. I roll her over. Cold shock knocks the wind out of me. I’ve never seen anybody look like this. I scoop her limp body into my arms, cradling the once beautiful face that I’ve seen in every light—rage to ecstasy and the full gamut in between—yet is now unrecognizable. Placing two blood-coated fingers over her throat, I wait. Nothing. A light pinch against her lifeless wrist.Nothing. Maybe a pulse does exist but it’s hidden, masked by my own racing one. Then again, by the look of her, likely not. One . . . two . . . three . . . plump, serene snowflakes begin floating down from the unseen sky above. Soon, they will converge and cover the tracks, the blood. The evidence.Mother Nature’s own blanket to hide the unsightly blemish in her yard. “I’m so sorry.” I don’t try to restrain the hot tears as they roll down my cheeks to land on her mangled lips—lips I had stolen plenty of kisses from, back when I was too stupid to realize how dangerous that really was. This is my fault. She had warned me. If I had just listened, had stayed away from her, had not told her how I felt . . . . . . had not fallen wildly in love with her. I lean down to steal a kiss even now, the coppery taste of her blood mixing with my salty tears. “I’m so damn sorry. I should never have even looked your way,” I manage to get out around my sobs, tucking the blanket she loved to curl up in over her. An almost inaudible gasp slips out. A slight breeze against my mouth more than anything else. My lungs freeze, my eyes glued to her, afraid to hope. “Alex?” Is it possible? A moment later, a second gasp—a wet, rattling sound—escapes. She’s not dead. Not yet, anyway.

BEFORE

ASH

People say I have a problem with anger.
You could say a lot of things about me and they all wouldn’t be nice. I’ve done a lot of things I’m not proud of.
People looked at me and only saw what was on the surface.
Money. Power. Talent.
Cash was the driving factor. Mainly because I was winning it out from under everyone’s noses on a daily basis by just being good at punching the shit through people. It’s fucking great to ride high, but there’s always someone right at your heels, snapping like a rabid beast, waiting for the moment you stumble.
Yeah, that’s the thing about getting a little fame and money - it made everyone below you jealous and jealous people were willing to do whatever it took to bring you down. They all wanted the prize and not all of them were up for playing fair to get it. There were lines you never crossed and that line had been obliterated a long time ago.
You hurt the people I love to get to me and I will fucking kill you.
I would destroy myself to save them.
I’ve done it before and I will do it time and time again.
I will beat your ass until you beg for mercy.
Repent or die.

AFTER

REN

I didn’t feel the pain as much anymore.
My knuckles had hardened, my muscles had tightened, and my pain receptors were shot.
Duck. Feign. Punch. Guard.
My Mum would be totally horrified knowing what I made of my life after she was gone. I lived for her, to see her win her battle, but in the end she lost. I wasn’t losing this fight. The fight for my future. How could she argue with that? She always wanted the best for me, even when she was too sick to move and this is my best. It’s just that it involves pounding my fists into the flesh of my opponent until they drop.
The love of a man. The love of an estranged father. The love of a mother… What good did it do if they just abandoned you in the end?
Me and my fists. That’s what would get me through this battle. That’s what would get me onto that podium. Me.
It didn’t start out this way. I, least of all, didn’t see it coming until it hit me square in the face.
The day I stood outside the place that would change my life into something unrecognisable.
The sign over the roller door that was painted in red letters. Red - the same colour as the blood that I drew three nights a week in the cage.
The one word that had become my mantra.

“It’s nice to see you again, Abigail.” The sound of his voice sends me back to that very first day I heard it in my coma. A set of shivers courses through my body knowing his sole intention is to harm me.

“You shouldn’t be here, Bill. I’d hate to see what would happen if Julio caught you near me,” I bravely state through clenched teeth while I attempt to control them from rattling in fear.

“Your little bodyguard won’t be coming back soon. I’ve made sure of that.” The words worry me the instant I absorb them and my body demands I move as I try to sidestep past Bill, but he lunges forward and fiercely grips my arm. His fingers forcefully dig into my skin as I continue my attempt to escape, to no avail. My scalp radiates with pain as he digs his hand into my hair and yanks. With his mouth brushing up against my cheek, I feel his dirty, warm breath as he says, “The only way you’re leaving is with me.”

“Fuck you!” I angrily growl.

He laughs at my exclamation. The eerie feeling of his breath running down my neck sends an unwelcome shiver down my spine. Grabbing onto his wrist, I try my best to free myself from his grip, but he tightens his hold, sending another jolt of pain down my scalp. This time I let out a wail in hopes someone will hear me.

He strikes my face with the hilt of his gun and I almost black out. “Shut the fuck up, bitch!” he shouts, tugging again on my head and urging me to walk. I try to dig my heels into the ground, but it doesn’t do any good and I soon feel something being shoved into my ribs, urging me forward with another jolt of pain. I already know it’s the gun digging into my ribs and fear is what motivates me to move.

“We’re leaving this room now. If you try to call out for help, Abigail, I won’t hesitate to pull the trigger,” he proclaims while shoving it deeper into my side, making me whimper from the pain.

My worst nightmare has come true. The fear of Bill finding me again is now a reality. Every precaution I took to keep safe seems worthless at this point as he drags me to the door. When he opens it, Charlie, the slimly little intern, is guarding it.

“Is it clear?” Bill asks him. He answers with a nod and Bill wraps his arm around my waist, but keeps the gun pointed at my ribs with the other. The feeling of his body next to mine disgusts me. His smell making my stomach churn and revulsion now replaces my fear.

“Keep moving,” Bill orders.

“Why are you doing this?” I desperately ask as I’m left no choice but to start walking again. “Please, Bill. If it’s money you want, I’ll give it all to you. Just let me go,” I plead while trying to hold back my tears.

“Oh, that’s exactly what you’re going to do, Abigail,” he says, vengeance evident in his tone.

With every step, my eyes scan for the perfect escape, but I’m left defeated when we near the exit. He removes the gun, places it into the waistband of his pants and pushes the door open. In that split second, I make my move. Lifting my foot, I stab him in the shin with the heel of my shoe. He releases a howl and loosens his grasp. I don’t hesitate to turn and slam my knee into his groin. As if expecting it, he blocks my hit and the only contact I make is his thigh. He reaches for me and wraps his hand into my dress, but it is a mistake. I slam my fist into his face; the contact shoots a bolt of pain up my arm, but it frees me again and this time I run. Or at least attempt to; the five-inch heels I have on severely slow me down. It allows Bill the opportunity to catch up to me and grab a hold of my hair again, but I don’t give up and continue to fight his grip.

It’s then I hear footsteps running towards me and my body is pulled free from Bill’s grasp as someone punches his face. Looking to see who’s come to my rescue, I see Julio struggling as Matt pulls me away.

“He hit you,” he says as his fingers gently touch my cheek. The contact makes me wince in pain as I remember that Bill struck me there.

“I’m fine,” I say before we hear a grunt.

Julio is holding Bill with his arm around his neck and he’s struggling for air. A feeling of relief courses through me until I see Bill reach down into his pants where his gun is nestled into his waistband. Time freezes when I see him point the gun in our direction.

My eyes stay locked onto his finger as he slowly pulls the trigger, my life flashing before my eyes: The day I had my first memory of Matt, leading to the day I went knocking on his door the first time. Next, the day Matt told me he loved me and chose me in our bathroom. The day he proposed and I had foolishly turned him down, regretting that choice at this moment. The day I drove away from him, having to wait to see him again. But most importantly, the day he said the words that will stay in my heart forever... even after I die.

“I don’t know what’s going on in that beautiful head of yours, but whatever it is, it brought you to me, which makes you mine now, and I always protect what’s mine, Abigail.”

The sound of the gun firing rings in my ear as I feel myself falling to the ground. Someone screams my name in the background as my back slams into the floor. My head is pounding with pain as it makes contact and my breath is completely taken from my lungs.

I am not looking forward to tonight. We are meeting Madame Elleanor and Kyle, an old high school buddy of ours, at a small, local bar. My dipshit of a brother found us a job; well, two actually. Elleanor owns a pool cleaning service that is more like a front for an escort service. Sebastian begged me to go to this meeting and keep an open mind about joining their businesses.
I need the money. I have bodybuilding competitions coming up and could use the money for registration. I began getting involved in the bodybuilding scene during my junior year of high school but, at twenty-three, this will be my first year to compete. I have packed on close to twenty-five pounds of muscle since graduating. It is hard work and takes a lot of discipline, but is well worth it. Someday, I will be on the stage in Las Vegas competing for Mr. Olympia.
Sebastian squeals the tires as we round a corner. Pulling into the parking lot, I see Kyle’s beat up old Dodge parked three spots in. Back at, Ashlane High, Kyle Ashton was a senior when we were freshman. Sebastian ran into him, again, a few months ago and they had been hanging out together ever since. Kyle bartended at Eric’s, the bar were we just parked. Even though the bar is in the heart of San Jose, it is chill. I’ve been here my fair share of times. There are many regulars and TV’s to watch sports. The older jukebox still sounds good and isn’t insanely loud, like at a club. It is the perfect spot to have this meeting and discuss our new adventure. Yeah, right! Ok, maybe adventure isn’t the right word, more like fornication.
Sebastian pulls me out of my mental conversation by flinging my door open. “Dude, Slo, get out of the damn car.”
Fuck! I don’t want to do this. My brother had better realize he owes me. I step out of the car, straighten my button-down shirt, and mess with the sleeves I have rolled up to the elbow. “Fine. Let’s do this. But you, asshole, you owe me big!”
I follow him inside the dark bar, rounding a sharp corner and head for the bar along the far wall. I quickly scan the area and see it is nearly dead. Two older guys occupy one booth and a young woman sitting at the bar, alone, talking to the bartender. The place always smells of smoke and mildew, even though you haven’t been able to smoke in restaurants or bars for years. Sebastian marches ahead of me to the farthest, darkest, corner in the bar.
In the circular booth, Kyle sits next to a woman who couldn’t have been much older than we are. I take Elleanor in before we fully reach them. She is wearing a dark business suit and has her straw colored hair pulled back, neatly. She looks prim and proper, especially with the librarian glasses that sit on the tip of her nose as she reads over some paperwork.
“Hey, guys!” Kyle announces. Miss Prim and Proper pops her head up. Elleanor takes in every inch of Bash before shifting her eyes to me. Her thin lips twitch, but remain tightly sealed. Her left eyebrow quirks, drawing my attention to her ice blue eyes. If she didn’t look like such a bitch, she could be pretty.
“Ky, you didn’t mention they were twins.” Her high-pitched voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me. I couldn’t do this. This chick is irritating the shit out of me, already.
Kyle shrugs. “Didn’t think it mattered.”
Elleanor huffs before extending her hand out to us. “I’m Madame Elleanor.”
I watch my brother transform, flashing a grin my way before taking Madame Elleanor’s hand and pressing a kiss to it. “I’m Sebastian.”
“Sloan.” I’m not going to pretend I liked her.
“Alright, have a seat boys and we can discuss your future with Devine Services.”
As we sit down, the waitress brings over a margarita, two beers and a coke. Lifting one of the beers to my lips, I take a long pull from the bottle. Elleanor sips her drink and then starts talking, again. “I operate two businesses under one name. If I hire you, you will be required to work for both entities. Devine Pool Services and Devine Male Escorts. I don’t know how much Ky has told you about me, or my businesses, so I will explain how this works. That way there is no miscommunication.”
I don’t know what she wants from us at this moment, but she continues to wait, looking at us expectantly. I finally nod. “Got it.”
Clearing her throat, she hands us each a packet. “The pool business is legit and you will be cleaning pools. However, each house on your route has a female in need of a companion. Most of the time they are just looking for someone to talk to—lonely housewives, widowed younger woman, and occasionally they will request your presence at some function or another.”
“So, we have sex with the Desperate Housewives of San Jose? Awesome!” Bash belts out next me, relaxing into the back of the booth and taking in what he wants to hear from our boss.
“No. Sex is up to you. As far as what you are required from me, you will find a list on the second page of your packet. But, what I just stated pretty much sums it up. Companionship. These women are looking for a companion. With that being said, I do suggest you figure out pricing for your extracurricular activities, as they do ask for them. The price for that is up to you, with me getting a portion. All of this is covered in your handbooks.
“We will meet once a month to go over any complaints from you or your customers.  We will also discuss new customers and payments. I have an account set up for the ladies to pay online and then I pay you out of those deposits. Extracurricular activities are set up differently. You receive cash payment at the time of service and deliver me the percentage at the following month’s meeting. Are there any questions?”
“Yeah, will I be fired for not participating in the extra stuff?” I don’t want to be rude, but these ladies probably are dirtier than street hookers are. I don’t need my junk falling off; besides, I don’t think I can do this. If it’s just talking and hanging out with them after cleaning their pool, okay, maybe. Nope. I can’t, I’m going to have to bail on Sebastian. When we get home, I’m telling him I can’t do it.
“Not at all, as long as you clean their pool once a week and chat with them a little, you’re golden. Now at the back of the handout is a form for you to be tested, just in case. I need proof you’re clean.”
“Is that all? I need to go.” I start to slip out of the booth.
Bash grabs my arm. “Hold on. Madame Elleanor, when can we start? I’ll get my clean pass and be ready to work tomorrow. So will Sloan.”
“First, call me Elleanor. Second, my number is on everything in there; call me once you’re done with your tests and we can set up your routes.”
I am out of the booth and standing a foot away with my hands in my pockets. Bash jumps out of the booth, clapping his hands together. “Alright, we’ll talk tomorrow. It was nice meeting you, Elleanor.” He clutches her hand in his, placing a lingering kiss.  Releasing her hand, he reaches over and fist bumps Kyle. “See ya later, Ky.”
Sebastian’s laugh echoes throughout the nearly empty bar as he spins around and saunters toward the door.
“It was nice meeting you. See ya, Kyle.” I’m not promising her I’d call. If I have it my way, I won’t be joining the Divine Services team. I am going to kill Sebastian. I know he won’t let me get out of this, because I owe him. But, after this, we’re not going to be even; he is going to owe me, times ten.
